Musical Theatre
Musical Theatre Class
Musical Theatre Class is open to all students ages 8-14.
-Fall Semester Classes are each Thursday, 5:35-7:05pm, Aug. 22 – Dec. 19.
-Starting in January 2025, Spring Semester Classes will switch to each Friday, 5:35-7:35, Jan. 10 – June 6.
During both Fall and Spring Semesters, students will discover how musical theatre is an exciting,
contemporary art form that involves telling stories through a seamless integration of dialogue,
song and dance, motivated by the demands of plot and character. Examining musical theatre
concepts through the lens of biblical scripture and research, students will explore:
- how music is used to convey character, emotion, and inform acting choices
- how the voice works and basic vocal techniques
- the importance of “singing with your eyes” to communicate the character’s intent
- theatre terminology and how to implement it properly
-acting games and warm-up activities through daily participation
- how dance and movement contribute to storytelling
- the importance of “acting a song” as opposed to just performing a song
- how to become a strong ensemble member
- the importance of keeping a journal reflecting what they’ve learned in class
- and so much more!
Students will have several opportunities to practice their theatre skills throughout the year, such
as in The Mystery of Christmas on Nov. 30 & Dec. 1; a Class Showcase on Dec.19; a full
Musical Theatre Production on June 7; and a selected Musical Theatre piece for the Spring
Worship Concert on June 11.
Students are welcome to try a musical theatre class for free and to invite other friends, ages 8-14,
to join them, even if they are not a current DT dancer (this class will focus much less on dance
technique). Commitment Forms to perform in The Mystery of Christmas are due August 30, the
Spring Worship Concert are due December 16 and the Musical Theatre Production are due on
January 31. All students enrolled in the spring semester Musical Theatre Class will be cast in the
spring Musical Theatre Production.
On with the Show!
