Upper School Modern and Contemporary Classes

​

For ALL classes listed below – the REQUIRED attire is any solid colored leotard or unitard and black bottoms.

​

LEVEL 3

​

Beginning Contemporary

Building off jazz technique, this class introduces fusion of ballet and modern techniques. Students will learn foundational concepts  from the Laban/Bartenieff and Limon release-based technique. They will continue strengthening coordination, flow of movement, and musicality to further their self-expression through dance.

​

By placement in Level III: One class per week.

Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings.

Beginning Modern

Building off Beginning Contemporary, the Horton technique will continue advancing students’ body awareness and coordination. Horton is a linear technique developed to help dancers build the strength needed to perform high intensity movement safely. After completing Beginning Modern, students will have the foundational knowledge of Horton technique including multiple Preludes and Fortifications.

LEVEL 4


Intermediate Modern

The 1st quarter builds on the dance technique of Lester Horton, and the 2nd quarter builds on Laban/Bartenieff technique as well as release-based modern. The 3rd quarter divides between these three techniques. The 4th quarter integrates all forms into their performance piece.

By placement in Level V: One class per week.
Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings.

Beginning Graham

Introduces the fundamental Graham phrases from the Martha Graham Technique. The dancer learns elements such as contraction, release, and spiral, using these elements in floor work, center work, and across the floor movement.

​

By placement in Level IVA: One class per week.
Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings.


Intermediate Graham

Builds on the knowledge of the Graham Technique. Dancers continue learning new exercises from the Graham Technique while also adding more difficult principles to previous exercises.


By placement in Level IVB: One class per week.
Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings.

LEVEL 5


Advanced Graham

Learns advanced Graham Exercises built upon all the fundamental phrases. The dancer also learns more advanced sequences of movement. Dancers will be challenged with different phrasing of exercises, timing, and execution of movement.

​

By placement in Level V: One class per week. 

Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings.

Advanced Modern

Focuses on advanced Horton technique by combining foundational Horton elements to challenge students’ recall, coordination, dynamic qualities, strength, and critical thinking. The class will additionally, dive deeper into traditional Horton exercises such as Studies, Fortifications, and Preludes.

​

By placement in Level V: One class per week. 

Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings.

Advanced Contemporary

Merges all different styles of dance at a higher level of difficulty. Release-based modern is incorporated in order to develop well-rounded advanced dancers. Coordination, spatial awareness, contemporary partnering, flow of movement, movement quality, & dynamics are further explored on a deeper level & continue to provide the dancer with artistically essential transferable skills.

By placement in Level V: One class per week

Performing: One class per week to perform.

Attire: Ballet uniform and fitted black leggings. More layers on top of ballet uniform and baggier clothing may be allowed at teacher’s discretion.
